Blink and you'll miss it.
Observational
Jokes built from something painfully ordinary, said out loud in exactly the right way.
Self-Deprecating
The comedian is the punchline. Turning your own flaws into the funniest part of the room.
Anti-Joke
Set up like a normal joke, then the punchline just lands flatter and funnier than you expected.
Cut out extra words. If the sentence still works without it, it's slowing the joke down.
Save the twist for the very end. The punchline should land on the final beat, not somewhere in the middle.
Say it, don't explain it. If you need to clarify why it's funny, the line needs more work.
Read it out loud. Timing lives in the rhythm of the sentence, not just the words on the page.
Comedian Henny Youngman built an entire career on one-liners, and his most famous line, "Take my wife, please," is still one of the most quoted jokes of the twentieth century. The format really took off in the era of vaudeville and radio, when comedians had only a few seconds to grab an audience before moving on to the next bit, and that same discipline is still what separates a good one-liner from a great one today.
There's a full archive of one-liners waiting for you, with new ones being added every day!
