Read it twice. Riddles hide their trick in one specific word, and you'll usually miss it the first pass.
Question the obvious. If an answer seems too literal to be right, that's usually exactly where it's hiding.
Watch for double meanings. Wordplay riddles almost always lean on a word that means two different things.
Say it out loud. Some riddles only click once you hear the words instead of just reading them.
The most famous riddle in history is probably the Sphinx's: what walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening? It comes straight out of Greek mythology, and people are still quoting it thousands of years later. Riddles like it show up in some of the oldest written texts we have, including Anglo-Saxon poetry from over 1,000 years ago, proof that humans have been trying to out-think each other for fun since basically forever.
