Scuba divers actually do fall backward off boats for safety reasons! The backward roll prevents their heavy tanks from hitting their head and allows them to keep their mask and regulator in place. It's also easier to maintain control of equipment during a backward entry than trying to step forward with 30+ pounds of gear!
