The joke hops off "couch potato," the slang for someone glued to the sofa, which dates back to the 1970s, and swaps in the kangaroo's famous pouch. Real kangaroos aren't as lazy as they look, but they do spend much of the hot Australian day lounging in the shade and save their energy for cooler mornings and evenings. Their babies, called joeys, are the true pouch potatoes, staying snuggled inside mom's pouch for around six months or more before venturing out on their own.
