Thunder is actually the sound that lightning makes! When lightning strikes, it heats the air so quickly that it expands rapidly, creating the booming sound we hear as thunder. You can estimate how far away lightning is by counting the seconds between the flash and the thunder, then dividing by 5 to get the distance in miles!
