The joke plays on "swept around," mixing a broom's actual job with the idea of being pushed around by everyone at work. Brooms have come a long way on their own career path, too: for centuries they were just bundles of twigs tied to a stick, until the Shakers popularized the flat broom around the turn of the 1800s. Most traditional brooms are still made from broomcorn, which isn't corn at all but a type of sorghum grown specifically for its long, stiff bristles.
