Life Hacks That Actually Work

Life hacks are hit or miss depending on who you talk to, but these ones are pretty useful! Even if one saves you some time and effort when you're in a pinch, it's worth it.

No Iron? No Problem

The last thing you think of while traveling is your wrinkly clothes. Obviously, the more delicate fabrics will be wrinkled, and no one wants to see that! Your hotel might not have an iron at the ready, but don't worry, there's a hack for that! Using a simple flat iron will get your clothes looking spic and span. Flat irons are small and sleek enough that you won't even notice them in your luggage. Use the flat iron for collars, sleeves, pockets... Everything!

Don't Let Your Buttons Pop Off

Every now and then we notice that a button has popped off on our favorite shirt. This usually happens because the thread of the button got a little worn out. To avoid this from happening, put a clear coat of nail polish on over the button. This should make them last way longer!

More Grilled Cheese

Have you ever had the urge to make eight grilled cheese sandwiches? Then this hack is for you! Butter one side of a slice of bread put cheese on top, and then repeat the first step with a new slice of bread. Then, put another baking pan on top so that the sandwiches are, well, sandwiched. Cook them in the oven for about 10 minutes and there you go! You have a bunch of grilled cheese sandwiches ready to eat.

When you get back, transfer all of the photos onto a disk, flash drive computer, phone, whatever. Return the camera, no questions asked. Just make sure you have the receipt! Removing Permanent Marker

We've all been there. You didn't realize it, but you somehow got a permanent marker on your favorite pair of pants. Well, don't worry! Use a highlighter to scrape it off. You will end up messing up the highlighter, but that's way better than messing up a pair of pants!

Doritos As Kindling

Fun fact: Doritos are super flammable. Why? We're not totally sure! But, it's good to know. If you go on a camping trip and you need kindling, an extra pack of Doritos will do the trick.

The Perfect Linen Closet

Organizing your linen closet just got a whole lot easier. Instead of stacking all of your linens together, place them (folded!) into the pillowcases! This is a great way to keep track of what sheets match and you'll have a nice linen closet to look at. It's a win-win!

Sneaking Out Easier

This could be useful for teenagers who are trying to have a fun night out or a parent who desperately needs to sneak out of their child's room without waking them up... Again. Twist some rubber bands around the handles and against the part of the door that snaps it shut. No noise! Don't slam the door hard, though, or you'll ruin everything!

The Perfect Pancake Hack

Use a squeeze bottle for the perfect pour. Once you're finished with your bottle of ketchup or mayo, clean it out (really well!) and use it for pancake batter. You'll get the perfect pancake every time without spilling or making a mess.

Painter’s Hack

Maybe it's time to invest in a rubber band ball! Here is another hack for rubber bands, this time with painting. The excess paint drop can be cumbersome for sure.

Coca-Cola Can Clean?

Yeah, apparently Coca-Cola can do the trick with some difficult stains, in particular, ones in your toilet. Of course, this should be your last option! I wonder what that says about what this soda does to your body...

Vacuum + Pantyhose = Lost and Found

Losing tiny objects like earrings or nails can be such a challenge! The best way to find them is to use a vacuum and a pantyhose or thin sock. The suction will be enough to lift the missing object from whatever crevice it's hiding in, but the pantyhose will be able to keep it from going into the vacuum. Problem solved!

DIY Beer Koozie

This beer koozie hack is the ultimate DIY. Not many beaches allow folks to bring alcoholic drinks, which can ruin the fun! A lot of people want to relax on the beach with an ice-cold beer (or wine cooler). The hack? Take an old soda can, cut out the top and bottom, and wrap it around the beer. The beach patrol folks won't notice a thing! Just drink responsibly, and throw out your trash!

Razor Saver

Water and metal don't mix, but for some reason, we insist on leaving our metal razors inside of the shower! After just a week, you may notice some rust forming on the edges of the razorblade. In order to avoid this, fully dry off the blade and put a binder clip over the razors. This will protect the metal and make for a longer-lasting razorblade!

Cut Your Bandaids

Everyone always forgets that we can cut bandaids to fit where the injury is! For particularly difficult spots like fingers, joints, and toes, cut the bandaid so that it's easy to wrap around your wound. You don't have to stick to the normal bandaid shape.

Polished and Organized

At some point in your life, you realize that you have tons of keys on your keychain. Where are they from? What do they go to? How did they get there? No worries, though, because there's a cheap alternative for marking your keys! Take any available nail polish you have and paint the ends of the keys. That way you have a color code for which key goes to what.

The Guide To Perfectly Parallel Parking

Parallel parking can be a daunting task. Sometimes, the spot is really tight, other times it's too big and you're 3 feet away from the curb. This guide shows the perfect parallel parking hack! It's all about lining up your car (size doesn't matter) and working with your angles. First, line up your front wheels with the front wheels of the car you're parking behind. Next, crank the wheel until you can't anymore. Start backing up into the spot, and then stop when you're at a 45-degree angle from the car you're parking in front of. Crank the wheel the other way, keep backing up, and boom! You're parked.

Messy Cord Days are Over

We all have tons of random cords in this day and age. At this point, it's become a habit for many households to keep random cords because "what if we find what it belongs to and we need it?" That's where the cord drawer is born. This is usually a random drawer in your home that quickly becomes overrun with cords. This is your solution! Take toilet paper rolls, line them up, and place the cords inside. No more chaos.

Get Everything Warm

You've been there. You heat up some leftover dinner in the microwave, but the middle is cold. What do you do? The easiest hack is to make sure that the meal is pushed to the edge of the plate. Whether it's mac and cheese, pasta, rice, or even bigger dishes like chicken and vegetables, a sandwich, etc, always make sure the food is on the edge of the plate! Deconstruct the meal if you have to, it's worth it.

DIY Ice Pack

Not everyone has an ice pack at the ready, but there's a quick and easy way to make one! You can mix three parts of water with one part of rubbing alcohol to make the perfect reusable ice pack. The alcohol prevents the pack from freezing completely solid, and you can still refreeze it. It's super sustainable, too!

Always Use a Tape Tab

Trying to find the end of a roll of tape is super annoying, especially when it's clear tape! This is a great hack to make sure that you can always find the edge of the tape without completely destroying it. This is a time-saving hack, too!

Organize Your Wrapping Paper

Wrapping paper storage is tricky. It kind of seems like no matter what, you're always doing to have random tubes of decorative paper flying all over the place. This is a fantastic hack that's pretty popular on Pinterest! Just simply get an over-the-door shoe organizer, cut out the bottoms, and tuck the rolls of wrapping paper through. No stress wrapping paper storage!

Pool Noodle Bumpers

Toddlers and young kids aren't the best at staying in bed. A cost-effective hack is to use a pool noodle to keep them safe and sound! Placing the pool noodle at the edge of the bed underneath the fitted sheet will gently guide your kid back into the center of the bed while they're asleep. No more bumps (and cries) in the night.

Weed-Hacker

The amount of string for your weed wacker isn't always in the forefront of your mind, right? Well, if you can't run to the store, and you have some zip ties, you'll be just fine to wack away at those pesky weeds. The usual strong for weed whackers have a similar consistency as zip ties. Substituting the string for zip ties will still get the job done, and you won't have to run around to the nearest Home Depot or Lowes.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

This watermelon hack is easy and quick! It's never fun to cut a watermelon, especially since it takes forever and can get really messy. This tool helps you slice up a watermelon in no time with no mess. It's a definitely a win!

The Perfect Cut

This is actually a really common and popular cake-cutting hack among the best chefs and bakers. Simply use a piece of floss to cut a cake! This works really well for when you need to cut the cake into layers, or if you're trying to get the perfect piece. Just don't use minty floss, that would not taste good! (Depending on the cake, that is.) This hack also works on blocks of cheese.

Taco Tuesday

Muffin tins are making a comeback! This time, you use the other side of the tin to create a fun taco bowl shape. All you have to do is use small corn or flour tortillas, place them on the tin (like so), and pop them in the oven. Now you have your own crunch taco bowl shells!

The Science of Soap

Bar soap is always a hassle. It melts onto everything in the shower, is dangerously slippery, and is rendered totally unusable after it reaches a certain size. Well, not anymore! Use the small sliver of soap you have left and "graft" it onto a bigger piece of soap. All you have to do is get both of them wet and rub them into a lather. They will fuse together!

Carabiner's For the One-Trip-Grocery-Shoppers

Use a carabiner to carry in all your groceries at once, because two trips are for weaklings. If you're the type of person who lives by the one-trip lifestyle, then you absolutely need a carabiner. Maybe two, if you can carry bags in both hands. The best part of the carabiner hack is to get a giant one. That means way more bags. Just make sure they're all secure and not ripping!

Keep Your Chocolate Chips Safe

For smaller ingredients like chocolate chips or rice, this is a great hack! To keep it fresh in the bag, use half of an old water bottle and the cap. Place the bag through the old water bottle, wrap it around, and then secure the cap. Done and done, no more spills!

If You Don't Have a Funnel, Use This

Not everyone has a funnel for oil changes, but this trick will work. Place a screwdriver in the hole and then pour the oil along the metal part of the tool. This will help guide the oil into the container, minimizing the amount of spillage! It's pretty foolproof if you go slowly.

Productivity Pro-Tip

If you want to have the most successful and production-filled day, use the Pomodoro technique. This technique is pretty simple: Plan your tests. Do a test (uninterrupted and undistracted!) for 25 minutes. Then, take a 5-minute break. Do this four more times (work 25 minutes, 5-minute break) and then take a longer break (usually 15-30 minutes.) If you're subjected to work-from-home life, this is a great technique!

Sharpen Your Knives

Having a sharp knife is ideal in the kitchen. You don't want to ruin the perfect cut just because you have a dull knife! If you don't have a knife sharpener handy, a ceramic plate will definitely do the trick. Just the bottom-raised part and give the knife a few good scrapes. It'll be as good as new!

Keep Those Rugs in Place

Oddly enough, rug pads are super expensive. Luckily, there are other ways to make sure your rug isn't rolling around all over the place. All you need to do is attach velcro to the floor and to the rug. Then, stick them together! No more slipping and sliding on your padless rug.

Grilled Watermelon? Yes, Please

There's a lot that you can do with a juicy watermelon! This is a hack that any vegetarian would love. This only works if you have access to a grill, and make sure it's hot enough! Place the watermelon slices on the hot grill and let it sit for a few minutes. The heat changes the texture of the watermelon and makes it into a sweet, smokey dish. Try it out!

Tennis Balls Galore

Need help organizing? This little tennis ball can help! If you cut a slit into a tennis ball, the tension of the plastic is tough enough that it can hold keys, pens, papers, rags... Anything you need! They're also just fun to look at, so this is perfect if this is your style of decorating!

No More Long Punishments

Have you ever had a teacher make you write line after line of apologies for a punishment? Well, if you're sneaky enough, you might not have to. Tape a bunch of pens together (make sure they're stacked vertically) and boom! You're writing five sentences at a time. That will cut your writing time down significantly.

No More Sweating Over Separating The Yolk

One of the most annoying baking processes is separating the egg yolk from the egg white. It's always so messy, and the risk of dropping the yolk is way too great. The easy fix is using an empty plastic water bottle. Use the suction from the opening to suck the yolk right up! Then, let go when it's safe. This is much less painful.

Stop Bending Your Plugs

Whoever says they haven't bent the prongs on a plug is lying. Everyone has done it, and it's always an accident! Truth be told, it's dangerous to have loose and bent prongs inside of an outlet. So, this hack is quite literally a lifesaver. Using nails or hooks, tie up the cord around them so that there is no pulling or tugging.

STRAWberry

Are you cutting the tops of strawberries off just to get rid of the green stem! Stop doing that! Instead, use a straw to completely get rid of the stem. You preserve way more of the strawberries and it creates less waste. Using a metal straw is ideal.

The Best Symbol Key Guide

This isn't as much of a hack as it is something that you should know about your keyboard. There are tons of different symbols that you can access just by hitting certain keys. Keep this handy, you never know when you're going to need it.

Closet Space Saver

Not everyone is blessed with a lot of closet space, so sometimes you have to get creative! Using soda can tabs can totally amplify your closet space. Depending on how tall your closet is, you could layer up a bunch of tops and bottoms for maximum space-saving.

Freeze Your Grapes!

First of all, frozen grapes make a delicious snack to begin with. So, you should always freeze at least a few for a nice refreshing snack. Secondly, frozen grapes make great ice cubes for wine! It's always a bummer when you realize that your nice white wine wasn't refrigerated and that you may have to use ice cubes. Using ice cubs waters down the drink, which isn't very tasty. Using frozen grapes doesn't water down your wine, keeps it cold, and you get to eat grapes when you're done!

From Crib To School

Cribs are basically useless after your child outgrows them. Instead of throwing it out or selling it, roll up your sleeves for a little DIY time! It's not difficult to make a crib into a fully functioning child's desk. This could be used as a place for coloring and art, and even homework when they enter school.

The Old Wooden Spoon Trick

The image of a wooden spoon over a boiling pot of pasta is a little cliche (especially in movies and TV shows) but it actually works! Pasta water boils over pretty quickly and randomly, but the wooden spoon stops the bubbles in their tracks. This is definitely a great hack if you need to walk away from a moment.

Easy Thaw, Easy Storage, Easy Everything

This hack is perfect for anyone who has a lot of meat to store. Ground meats especially work well, but thinly sliced or pounded chicken will also work. Make sure everything is super thin and taking up as much of the freezer bag as possible. This makes it easier to store, and your meat will dethaw way quicker!

Can Openers Aren't Just for Cans

Blister packs are so annoying! Even the best scissors struggle to cut them. Honestly, the best way to get those packages open is to use a can opener. The sharp blade is literally made to cut metal, so it only makes sense that it'll easily cut through the plastic. Try it next time!

Tying Running Shoes

Beginner runners may not realize this, but it's important to lace up your shoes correctly. These are just a few ways to lace up your sneakers! You should do this in accordance with your running style and foot shape. It may take a while to get the "right" lace-up, but starting with these six options will be pretty helpful.

Easy Pony-Tails

Now, this might not be the best way to style a ponytail, but if you're in a crunch it could be a lifesaver! Gather up the hair, put a hair-tie over the vacuum nozzle, and suck the hair into the nozzle. After that, slide the hair-tie over the hair. There you have it! A (somewhat) perfect ponytail.

Folding a Fitted Sheet

The fitted sheet is always a bit of a nightmare. It's so much of a nightmare that people have actually created a step-by-step guide to help others fold them! It's pretty simple, just go slowly.

Always Have Ketchup On You

Use an empty contact case and fill it with your favorite condiments! Alright, this one is a bit weird, but just wait a minute! If you're a lover of ketchup, mustard, sriracha, mayo, and any other condiment then this could be of use to you. It's way better than sitting on a ketchup packet. Just make sure to keep the caps on tight!

DIY Phone Stand

Phone mounts for your car are pretty ideal, but they can be a bit pricey sometimes! Plus, what if you need one but you don't have one? Well, we're willing to bet that you'll have a rubber band lying around in your car. In order to make your own DIY phone stand, loop the rubber band through the air vents of your car and wrap it around your phone. Make sure it's tight!

Sensory Bottles

Kids have to go in time-out every now and then. They have a lot of big emotions in their tiny bodies, so they won't be perfect at expressing themselves. This hack is a great way to get your kids in time out and to help them chill out. Just fill a bottle with 3 parts water, one part glitter glue. Add ultrafine glitter for extra glam. If your kid needs a timeout, give them the bottle, have them shake it up, and then tell them to go to sit in time out. They can come out once the bottle is settled! This will also help them mellow out by watching the relaxing glitter.

Fridge Space

Need extra fridge space? Say no more! This is a really easy and inexpensive hack for keeping your freezer looking organized. Take any bags of frozen food and flip them to the racks of the freezer using binder clips! That way, you can still see the food that you have and it's easy to grab. No more wasted food nor wasted time.

A Nutty Little Hack

We're not sure why, but this trick totally works. A lot of furniture refurbishers and interior decorators swear by this hack. Use a walnut (in its truest form) to get work on the scuff marks of wood. The trick is that the oil in the walnut gets absorbed by the natural wood which helps remove the damaged spots. It's pretty neat!

Condiments, All in One

Muffin trays don't only have to carry muffins. They're actually a great way for serving up everybody's favorite condiment in one simple platter! This is great for BBQs and other gatherings where it's a family-style serving method. Try it out!

No More Crinkled Documents

To be honest, most people don't have a hardcover folder for binders for their important documents. On the off chance that you need to transport something, how many times does it get crinkled? Well, use this hack next time you're in a pinch! If you put a piece of cardboard in a ziplock bag with your paper, it will keep it protected and flat.

Ways to Store Your Lids

Trying to find the perfect way to store your lids is a struggle. To store your pots and pans, you can stack them, but not with the lids still on! So, where do the lids even go? Usually, they just pile up in random cabinets, right? Not anymore! If you have any hooks or racks, place them inside of the cabinets to create verticle storage space.

Need Some Ice Cold Brews?

A cooler is nice to have for those long days outside, but they don't always last! At the end of the day, you're more than likely to find a pool of water surrounding the rest of your cans of soda or beers. In order to avoid this, sprinkle some salt over the ice. It'll last way longer!

An Apple A Day... No, For Real

If you’re running late and forget to brush your teeth, grab an apple to help with your morning breath. An apple a day keeps away the doctor and the dentist! But, brush your teeth still.

How To Bake Your Favorite Cookie

Baking is a science, plain and simple. It depends on how much of an ingredient you put in to get your favorite cookie. This is a quick and easy guide sheet to make sure that you're baking the perfect cookie every time.
