'Goodnight Mommy" Is Getting a Reboot

The idea of a cult classic film getting rebooted by Amazon Studios sounds terrifying, but it might not be so bad. Naomi Watts will executive produce and star in the reboot, and the original directors, Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, will executive produce alongside her.

The Austrian horror film follows a woman and her two sons living in a desolate part of town. The mother is recovering from facial surgery, and it seems that her demeanor has completely changed. Her boys are terrified as they realize they don't know their mother at all.

Director Matt Sobel said to Variety about the announcement, “My favorite films are those that invite the audience to step inside their protagonist’s journey. In our re-imagining of Goodnight Mommy, fear of abandonment — and the dreadful realization that those close to us may not be who they seem — create an immersive nightmare, with visceral sensations front and center."

Unlike the original, this reboot will be in English. Some critics of the reboot might think that changing the language will defeat the purpose of the film. After all, for non-German speakers, half of the mystery is not understanding the language itself.

A timeline for the film has not been released, so fans are only left to speculate what changes they will make.
